Ep. 505 - GMMB Tuesday 11 Feb 2025

Rachael was in and talked about real estate and chicken eggs, but mostly real estate, namely how much commercial space downtown is empty.

Andrew Meyers came into the studio. He is a music promoter, starting a new festival he hopes will become an annual event. Winter Warmer will be this weekend at Roaring Camp. We heard a couple of the songs that will be performed. It sounds like a good time.

We heard of a lost ring being found and poisonous snakes being found as well.

Gail Pellerin spoke of the Battery Energy Storage System Fire and her reaction to it.

Mark Mozina had lots to talk about in space.

In the Ag Report, Michael Olson was joined by Norman Groot, executive director of the Monterey Farm Bureau, to also discuss the BESS fire, and what sort of monitoring is being done, to measure the uptake of heavy metals into local crops.

Dr. Pete was in the studio with us. He brought a staggering number of lemons, and one grotesquely large orange. He also brought homemade cookies. He told us about school age children visiting veterinary practices and even volunteering to work in animal hospitals. He knew he wanted to be a vet when he was very young.

Rosemary's movie pick of the week was Parthenope. Alex did not commit to a pick of the week, though he did seem to me to be partial to Heart Eyes, which he said is both a horror movie and a RomCom.

Charlie the gardening expert discussed flowering trees.

Gary Shapiro ran through the ten nominations for best picture at this year's Oscars, none of which Bill had seen, and few of which he had even heard. Spoiler alert: Gary's favorite of the bunch is The Brutalist.

Last week Jaime Smith agreed to try a new recipe, the Elvis burger. It's a burger with bacon, cooked banana and peanut butter. Rosemary made them Sunday night, and Bill got to try it Monday morning. Today the three of us compared notes.

Gary Shapiro told us of the books he enjoyed most in 2024, including Connie Chung's autobiography.

In good news we heard of a deaf girl who has glasses that display for her the words that she and others speak.

Rachael talked about horror and about shoes, but she did not talk about horrible shoes.

John Laird discussed the testing that has been going on after the recent Vistra fire. Some results will be released today. He emphasized the need for more ongoing, independent testing.

Assemblymember Dawn Addis joined us to talk about AB 303 which she authored. It provides for safety improvements to and oversight of Battery Energy Storage Systems, such as the one that recently burned in Moss Landing.

Mark Mozina had several space-related topics for us.

Michael Olson has been following the testing of soil and water for heavy metal contamination from the Moss Landing BESS fire. What he has heard so far is not encouraging.

We heard of firemen rescuing a turtle that had fallen into a storm drain, and a dog lost for eight years, reunited with his owner because he had a microchip. The dog had it, not the owner.

Charlie taught us all about when to fertilize plants in relation to when the rain falls, as well as his favorite berry that grows locally, that being the blueberry.
