Ep. 501 - GMMB Wednesday 5 Feb 2025

Last week Jaime Smith agreed to try a new recipe, the Elvis burger. It's a burger with bacon, cooked banana and peanut butter. Rosemary made them Sunday night, and Bill got to try it Monday morning. Today the three of us compared notes.

Gary Shapiro told us of the books he enjoyed most in 2024, including Connie Chung's autobiography.

In good news we heard of a deaf girl who has glasses that display for her the words that she and others speak.

Rachael talked about horror and about shoes, but she did not talk about horrible shoes.

John Laird discussed the testing that has been going on after the recent Vistra fire. Some results will be released today. He emphasized the need for more ongoing, independent testing.

Ep. 499 - GMMB Monday 3 Feb 2025

Assemblymember Dawn Addis joined us to talk about AB 303 which she authored. It provides for safety improvements to and oversight of Battery Energy Storage Systems, such as the one that recently burned in Moss Landing.

Mark Mozina had several space-related topics for us.

Michael Olson has been following the testing of soil and water for heavy metal contamination from the Moss Landing BESS fire. What he has heard so far is not encouraging.

Dr. Pete had interesting things to share:

• Rabies
• Bird flu
• Hip surgery
• Tarantulas as pets
• Bing Crosby sold orange juice

We heard of firemen rescuing a turtle that had fallen into a storm drain, and a dog lost for eight years, reunited with his owner because he had a microchip. The dog had it, not the owner.

Charlie taught us all about when to fertilize plants in relation to when the rain falls, as well as his favorite berry that grows locally, that being the blueberry.

Ep. 497 - GMMB Thursday 30 Jan 2025

In the good news we heard about Osiris Rex. We have talked about that before. It is a project to collect material from an asteroid and bring it back to earth. Well it is back, and scientists have discovered the building blocks of life in the samples returned. That is big news, indeed. We also heard about the local Hideout restaurant buying basketballs for 250 kids.

It is time again for the AT&T Pro Am, so we know where Jacobi is going to be for the next few days. He reminisced about the tournament in the old days, before recent changes, but said it is going to be very good golfers and a great time.

Rosemary managed to find some good news stories around the recent fires.

Jaime Smith started off talking about chicken stock and turkey burgers. Bill then sidetracked him with discussion of the peanut butter and nannar sandwiches Elvis favored. Jaime suggested he even liked hamburgers with peanut butter and bannanas, and we found mention of them online. So, separately, both he and Rosemary will make these before next Wednesday, and that day we will compare notes. That should be episode 501.

Ep. 495 - GMMB Tuesday 28 Jan 2025

John Hohmann told us of the Polar Plunge coming up in March, to benefit Special Olympics. Rosemary joins him for it every year. It seems this year Bill will as well.

Holland MacLaurie, port director of the Santa Cruz Small Craft Harbor discussed damage done in recent storms, and rebuilding that has been done since.

Rachael told of her secret plan to beat the early morning traffic.

Ep. 494 - GMMB Monday 27 Jan 2025

Assemblymember Gail Pellerin let us know she has asked for testing to be done to reveal what contamination was caused by the recent power plant fire in Moss Landing. Now we are awaiting the results.

Mark Mozena had various space-related topics to discuss.

Michael Olson wondered what the new president's deportation plans will mean to the 55,000 agriculture workers and 25,000 tourism workers in Monterey County, many of whom are immigrants.

Is it unkind to call a man a rodent face? What is horse girl? There were more questions than answers today.
